Social Business : A New Path for Capitalism ?
Paradoxically, while global GDP has grown considerably in the past twenty years, the gap between the rich and the poor has increased, both in the North and the South. In our post-crisis, post-Fukushima era, our question reflects a strong need for change and meaning, especially among the younger generations. This search for a new path has encouraged the development of Social Business.
The movie provides both a practical illustration and an analytical overview of Social Business where both sides are intertwined and echo each other. On the practical side, we used a handicraft social business in Cambodia near Angkor Wat, Cambolac, founded by a French ex-trader following his realization that Angkor remained one the poorest regions in Cambodia despite being one of the most visited places in the world. On the analytical side, we interviewed numerous key professionals in Europe, the US and Cambodia, not only in the field of Social Enterprise, but also in NGOs, Finance, Environment and Education.
Despite being a topical subject, there are few movies on Social Enterprise, especially few who explore both the social and business aspects.
I have worked in finance for over 15 years, in Paris and London, and from knowing the system inside out, I wanted to highlight the bridge between philanthropy and finance, to reconcile two worlds traditionally seen as antagonistic, via the Social Enterprise movement. I produced this film independently of any broadcasters and organizations, with the sense of urgency that our current system and lifestyles are unsustainable and that we need to find new ways of living and interacting with each other and the planet. I believe we will survive, hence I believe in change. This is what this film is trying to encourage and inspire.
The director Nicolas Jouvin has had over 25-year experience in documentary filmmaking and has worked for major French broadcasters. His films have received numerous awards. I was lucky to have such an experimented and talented professional follow me in this adventure.
